Are you a local educator? If you are, then chances are you have heard of Donors Choose. Maybe one of your fellow teachers has already used it to get supplies for their classroom.
Donorschoose.org is a crowdfunding platform that was started by Charles Best in 2000. Best , a teacher himself was inspired to create the platform when he realized how much himself and his fellow teachers were spending on supplies. He thought that other people may be willing to help if they could see exactly where their donations were going.
The platform works like this. As an educator, you will need to create an account and then in turn a project. That project is then approved by the staff at Donors Chose and goes live on their website. The project can then be seen and shared on social media with the intention that others in your local area (or even companies or donors from all over) will donate a certain amount. If enough people and or companies donate, the project then becomes “funded” successfully. Once the project is funded, the staff at Donors Choose will order the supplies that your project was requesting and ship them directly to your school.
Sounds easy doesn’t it?
There are of course a few smaller steps to the process. There are also ways that you can help get your project get funded more quickly. As mentioned above, a lot of times companies like Google and HP will donate to certain projects based on the specific items requested. They also tend to donate or match donations at different times of the year. So by keeping track and asking for certain things at certain times, you can make it far more likely to succeed. Donors Choose also uses a point system where the more successfully funded projects you have the more you can create. So it’s better to start small and make it more likely that your project will be funded.
